Arkadiusz Sylwestrowicz’ exhibition will present his latest series of paintings, which the artist began to paint during his residency in Chile. Works by Arkadiusz Sylwestrowicz stem from conceptual work. The exhibition title is an algorithm created by dr Robert Barański from AGH University of Science and Technology to translate the language of paintings into the language of music. The mathematic formula processes paintings into a series of sounds. The sound and length of thus obtained signal depends on the parameters of a given painting, its composition, texture and colors. The tone and texture that comprise hues of a given color determine signal frequencies. Individual elements of the painting create sounds arranged by Jacek Grudzień that will accompany the exhibition. Painting and music co-create exhibition space. A collaboration between a scientist and two artists makes a synesthetic art dream come true, here understood as musicality of painting.

 

Arkadiusz Sylwestrowicz’ project can be read as representative of expanded painting, an attempt at transgressing the limits of this art and opening it up to new realms. His paintings stem from the abstract tradition, yet their composition breaks with the rigidity of geometric forms, lending room to experiments. In his works, Sylwestrowicz often makes use of unconventional materials, pure pigment, industrial paint, and uses a binding agent that he himself created. Experiment enriches the artist’s means of expression. Mixing paint with glass renders irregular texture that enhances the composition’s interaction with the surrounding light. And in the case of the latest series of paintings, the added element is sound derived directly from the works presented.

 

Arkadiusz Sylwestrowicz  b. 1971 in Łódź

At present, PhD assistant in prof. M. Świeszowski’s studio at the Faculty of Painting, Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk. His works have been exhibited in Poland and abroad (in Austria, Germany and India, among others) and can be found both in private collections (Dariusz Bieńkowski’s, among other) as well as those of such museums as Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź and National Museum in Gdańsk, Department of Modern Art - The Opatów Palace.
 

Robert Barański, PhD b. 1977 in Cieszyn

At present, adjunct professor at AGH Staszic University of Science and Technology, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Robotics, Department of Mechanics and Vibroacoustics. In 2008 he defended his PhD thesis entitled „Falkowa funkcja przejścia w analizie drgań układu narzędzie ręczne – ręka operatora”. Author or co-author of 15 scholarly articles and one monography (“Nowoczesne metody badania procesów wibroakustycznych – część II” / Innovative method of studying vibroacoustic processes – volume II). His professional interests are connected with acoustic and oscillatory signal analysis, with emphasis on non-stationary signals. An amateur musician (guitarist)

Jacek Grudzień b. 1961 in Warsaw
He debuted in 1983 at the International Festival of Contemporary Music “Warsaw Autumn”. At the time, he was studying composition with prof. Włodzimierz Kotoński and piano improvisation with Szabolsc Esztenyi at Warsaw Academy of Music. In 1986 he received a post-graduate fellowship in London, funded by Witold Lutosławski. He is a laurate of the 1988 Polish Young Composers Competition and the 1995 Polish Nationwide Competition for a Classical Guitar Composition. In 2003, his composition “Ad Naan” was a recommended work at the International Composers' Rostrum in Vienna. His compositional interests also include film and theater scores. Currently, he collaborates with Polish Radio’s Experimental Studio.
