Opening 05.11.2010, at 6 p.m.

Curator: Anna Szynwelska

The Dutch artist, Rosa van Hofwegen developed an artistic project entitled “Loss of Sorrow” after her mother passed away. An essential part of the project is the participation of over fifty people remembering their deceased mothers. The participants, varying from young to old, from all over Drenthe province, gave a souvenir in which they recognize their mother - an everyday thing, a detail from the life of this woman. These objects are incorporated in an expressive work of art which is shown together with a number of films, photography and installations which connect the theme. The participants have also ceded a handwritten text in which the commemoration of the mother is central. These texts are collected in a beautifully designed  book.

The different parts: the book, the exposition with the films and installations, make Loss of Sorrow a complete project at which the theme “Ode to deceased mothers” is illuminated in different ways. “Loss of Sorrow” goes deep into the matter with what people consider as evident and ordinary and the little everyday things of life are lifted to a higher level.

Important part of the project is cooperation with students of Department of the Dutch Literature and Language* of Katolicki Uniwersytet Lubelski who would translate chosen excerpts from the book “Loss of Sorrow” into Polish – so that the memories of the Dutch participants could also be printed and presented in Laznia during the exhibition, which would help understand Polish public the very essence of “Loss of Sorrow” project.
